Learning Soft Skills to Soften Automation’s Impact

L&D, HR Personnel as Talent Developers
Have Vital Roles to Play: LinkedIn Report

Learning “soft skills” – leadership, communication, collaboration, and other role-specific skills – will soften the impact of automation on future jobs.

According to LinkedIn’s 2018 Workplace Learning Report, the most important focus for Learning and Development (L&D) is training for soft skills. Others include identifying trends to prevent future skills gap, understanding technology’s impact on jobs, and having consistent global skills training.

Moreover, they include delivering insights on internal skills gaps, tracking skills development, and accessing skills competencies.

“The short shelf life of skills and a tightening labor market are giving rise to a multitude of skill gaps. Businesses are … trying to hold onto their best talent and struggling to fill key positions. Individuals are conscious of staying relevant in the age of automation,” the LinkedIn report said.

TALENT DEVELOPERS: ENHANCING SKILLS

This is where talent developers such as the L&D team and Human Resources department come in to address skills gaps.

“Enter the talent development function – the organizational leaders creating learning opportunities to enable employee growth and achievement,” LinkedIn’s report stressed. “They have the ability to guide their organizations to success in tomorrow’s labor market, but they can’t do it alone.”

Therefore, talent developers “must play a critical role in shaping future workforce strategy, while delivering hyper-relevant content to support employee needs of today, and cater these vast efforts to a multi-generational workforce with varied learning preferences,” the LinkedIn report added.

Consequently, talent developers have embraced the role of a “relationship builder,” cultivating relationships in the workforce. According to LinkedIn, these relationships form part of a “learning culture that thrives in a workforce of constant change.”

The report said 68% of employees prefer to learn at work, while 58% of employees prefer to learn at their own pace. However, 49% of employees prefer to learn at the point of need.

SOFT SKILLS AND WORKPLACE LEARNING TRENDS

The report said talent developers have been preparing their workforce for automation, naming soft-skills training their number one priority. LinkedIn’s top 2018 Workplace Learning Trends include:

Softening the impact of automation. The No.1 priority for talent development in 2018 is training for soft skills.

Balancing today’s challenges with tomorrow’s opportunities. Training for today’s skill demands must strike a balance in preventing tomorrow’s skill gaps.

The rise of digital is transforming talent development. Online learning solutions shall meet the needs of an increasingly diverse, multi-generational workforce.

“The most successful talent developers are balancing today’s challenges with preparing employees for tomorrow’s opportunities,” LinkedIn said.

While top-level executives and people managers have ranked “identifying industry trends to prevent internal skill gaps” as second priority for L&D initiatives in 2018, talent developers themselves placed this as sixth on their list, however.

GAMIFIED LEARNING SKILLS

A company like TeleDevelopment Services provides maximized learning programs through dynamic interactive content and gamified e-learning modules. Its highly interactive e-learning modules and results-based, real-time coaching guarantee continuous support for self-development and learning.

TeleDevelopment offerings of Lean-Six Sigma Black Belt Training have been cost-effective, time-saving, high-quality, and highly efficient. It has also conducted trainings in online data analytics and advanced MS Excel to help enhance human capital, among others.

Indeed, the key differentiators of any organization are its people. And talent developers are the ones that put these very people on board – enabling, developing, and activating them.

Talent developers, therefore, have the unique ability and vital role to hone employee talent. Overall, they build the talent strategy and the infrastructure of employee journeys and experiences.
